The Energy Saving Trust and Carbon Trust has announced a £6.3 million investment in eight community heating schemes.
The schemes will benefit 1250 households across the UK, most of which fall into the 'fuel poor' category. This represents 4000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year saved. To date more than 35 000 people on low incomes have been connected to chp schemes.

Projects eligible for funding in this round include Clydebank Housing Association which will receive almost £800 000 for installation of a chp network connecting 400 homes, a primary school and a hall. The largest amount of cash goes to Edinburgh University which will receive £2 691 780 for replacing a steam-based heat network with chp to connect 19 teaching and research buildings on its campus.

The grants are allocated under the government's Community Energy Programme. Lord Whitty, minister for sustainable energy says: "There are still opportunities for communities across the UK to benefit from the current programme and I look forward to many more bids coming forward and strengthening the case for continuing the programme beyond March 2005."
