More than 5000 east London housing association tenants are to get help to manage their finances under a new scheme.
East Thames Housing Group, Springboard Housing Association and London & Quadrant Housing Group will offer money management and debt advice to their tenants in Newham from September.

Tenants will get help from qualified independent debt advisers at a local community centre. Housing officers from the three associations will direct tenants to the service.

The project is part of the Change scheme, run by London & Quadrant, which offers financial advice, loans and savings to tenants who might not borrow from mainstream banks. Andrew Chaplin, Change's project manager at London & Quadrant, said: "I would hope we can help before residents get into financial trouble."

The Change scheme also has a money management project, a community bank and a loans project that is set to start in September.

All of these are in London boroughs.
