The firm’s managing director on the importance of patience, his love of fish and chips and his “frightening” memory for numbers
Why did you choose construction as a career?
I have always had an analytical/mathematical interest and knew I wanted a career where I can work with numbers. After doing some work experience on a construction site as a labourer (many years ago), I knew this was the industry I wanted to work in, to use my head and not my hands.
What has been your biggest career challenge to date?
Leaving a large international practice and setting up MESH. I am proud of what the business partners and myself have created over the last seven years.
We have a great team behind us and are gaining real momentum, with our focus on healthcare being the foundation of a great business.
If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
Given that 96% of businesses in the UK have fewer than 10 employees, as an industry there needs to be more support for SMEs – and more collaboration. The balance between governance, efficiency and good judgment in the world of procurement is not always evident. It is equally sad to see the lack of support from larger organisations towards SMEs.
What have you worked on that you’re most proud of?
Leading a team of 15 to secure and deliver the award-winning Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, while working at Davis Langdon. A significant number of that team are with me now at MESH.
What is the most helpful advice you have been given?
During my time at Davis Langdon, one of the partners’ advice was: Always look after your clients. That has always stuck with me, and I have made that our key ethos at MESH, which I suppose is evidenced by the fact that we have an 85% repeat client base.
What is your favourite building in the world?
The Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, I’ve worked on the building but can’t afford to stay there. Maybe one day when I retire…
What single piece of advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession?
Be patient and listen and learn from the people around you.
Who do you most admire in the construction industry?
Anyone who deals with information factually and ensures that their client is always informed of the full picture, be it good news or bad news with no spin.
What famous building do you wish you’d worked on?
No real famous buildings. However, I would have liked to have helped more with the the Nightingale hospitals during the pandemic.
Which famous building do you most dislike?
Dislike is a strong word, but the Ark Building by Hammersmith is not a product of beauty!
What’s it like being you?
Every day is different and often a surprise. It is also rewarding. I am lucky to have worked on a significant number of independent hospitals in the UK which has given the team opportunities to grow and develop.
What do you think your best quality is?
Getting the unplanned challenges of the day complete when others would say no.
What trait do you most dislike in yourself? And in other people?
I need to learn to be more patient, which is ironic as my advice to those starting in the industry is to be patient. I wish others would stop promising to meet crazy deadlines!
Do you have a life philosophy?
To always be honest and to have a fair approach to work and life. Don’t be frightened to speak your mind.

- Seeing MESH grow.
- Renovating houses.
- Sunday afternoon coffee in Café Nero – usually with my laptop.
What’s a secret skill we don’t know you have?
A frightening memory for numbers.
What’s your most prized possession?
Max – my dog. But, if my fiancée asks, it’s her.

Early bird.
What’s your favourite food?
Fish and chips.
What would your superpower be?
To control time. I would love more hours in a day!
