The digital tendering platform’s manager for the UK and Ireland on making the move into the construction industry, why she has no regrets and her love of gourmet cooking

Neela Ahmed

Why did you choose construction as a career?

Although I began my career in a different field, I was drawn to the construction industry because of its amazing impact on shaping our world. The opportunity to lead E1 in the UK and Ireland, and contribute to a sector that builds our communities and infrastructures, was too exciting to pass up. It’s an industry filled with challenges and opportunities, which is where I thrive.

What are you most proud of in your career to date?

I am most proud of the teams I have built and the cultures we have fostered together. Leading diverse, high-performing teams to achieve excellence across various industries and geographics (UK and North America) has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing individuals grow and succeed within those teams is something that brings me great joy.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career to date

The biggest challenge of my career so far has been transitioning into the construction tech industry without a background in construction. It required a steep learning curve and a significant amount of dedication to quickly understand the industry’s intricacies and the unique challenges our customers face.

However, this challenge has also been incredibly rewarding, as it has pushed me to grow professionally. My unique background in stakeholder management has let me bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table, which is exactly what this industry needs!

If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?

I would like to see more emphasis on sustainability and innovation within the construction industry. There’s so much potential for adopting greener practices and leveraging technology to create more efficient and eco-friendly building processes.

What is the most helpful advice that you have been given?

Always be curious and never stop learning. This simple yet powerful idea has helped me grow and succeed in different jobs and industries. By keeping a growth mindset, I have been able to adapt to new challenges and stay excited about what I do.

Pushing the boundaries: the Guggenheim Museum in Blibao

Name your favourite building in the world

I visited the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao this spring, and – wow – it blew me away! The architecture is just so stunning and innovative. It really embodies creativity and pushes the boundaries of design.

Next on my bucket list is Petra! I’ve been wanting to explore the ancient red sandstone cliffs for ages. I think, once I finally get there, it might just top the experience I had in Bilbao!

What single piece of advice would you give to someone starting out in your profession?

Keep building strong relationships and network actively. The connections you make and the relationships you nurture will be invaluable throughout your career. Also, always be willing to learn from others and seek out mentors who can guide you!

Who do you most admire in the construction industry?

I deeply admire the collective of forward-thinking individuals who are driving innovation and leveraging technology to elevate the construction sector. These visionaries are at the forefront of integrating digital solutions, enhancing sustainability, and improving efficiency and safety in construction.

Their collaborative spirit and dedication to pushing boundaries are transforming the industry, making it more resilient and adaptive to our evolving world. It’s truly inspiring to witness how their passion and forward-thinking approach are shaping the future of construction for the better.

What is it like being you (and doing your job)?

Exciting and dynamic! I thrive on a challenge and I am lucky to lead a team that is passionate about making a difference in the construction industry. Every day brings new opportunities to learn and grow, and I love the fast-paced environment and the impact we’re making.

Do you have a life philosophy?

Absolutely. I firmly believe that “life is too short to hold regrets”. This philosophy drives me to embrace opportunities, learn from experiences, and move forward with a positive outlook.

Holding onto regrets can weigh you down, but by focusing on growth and resilience, you can turn any situation into a valuable lesson. This approach not only enhances personal well-being but also inspires those around you to adopt a forward-thinking and proactive mindset.

Tell us about a secret skill that we don’t know you have

I have a knack for gourmet cooking and always have fun trying out new recipes. Hosting dinner parties is something I really enjoy because it gives me a chance to share my culinary creations with friends and family. It’s definitely one of my favourite things to do!

Early bird or night owl?

I am an early bird. I love starting my day with a clear mind and a fresh perspective, which helps me to tackle the day’s challenges head-on.

What would your superpower be?

The ability to instantly learn and master any skill. Imagine being able to continually acquire new knowledge and talents without the usual time constraints – that’s the dream.
