The first BREEAM Awards were launched this year to recognise developments for outstanding achievements in environmental design and management.

The winners were:

1 The Mills Building, Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Weybridge (winner of the bespoke category). Design features include use of propane chillers with an ozone- depleting potential of zero.

2 The Allerton Bywater Networkcentre in Leeds (winner of the industrial category).

3 Debut at Willans Green, Rugby (winner of EcoHomes category).

4 Scottish Natural Heritage Headquarters, Westcraig, Inverness (winner of the offices category). This building achieved the highest score since the launch of the Office scheme. Key features included outside views for 80% of the lettable area and adoption of best practice for limiting site impact during construction.
